Matt Riddle Released from Bellator After Removal From Friday’s Fight Card

Looks like UFC veteran Matt Riddle won’t ever step foot inside of the Bellator cage.

After an incredibly short-lived retirement in September, Riddle has been released by Bellator after his Bellator 109 bout against Nathan Coy was scrapped on Tuesday.

MMA Fighting was the first media outlet to report the news and Bellator’s Director of Communications, Anthony Mazzuca, sent out a prepared statement to media outlets in response to the firing.

"Matt was a guy we had high hopes for coming into Bellator," Mazzuca wrote. "After Matt suffered his rib injury and withdrew from our tournament, we went back to the drawing board and got Matt another fight on November 22nd.”

"Unfortunately, Matt very recently informed us he would not be fighting on November 22nd from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and at that point we decided to release Matt from Bellator. We wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Riddle was set to make his promotional debut against Luis Melo at Bellator 100 on September 20, but a cracked rib forced him to withdraw from the bout days before the fight.

A second late notice withdrawal in a roughly two-month period was apparently all the leeway Bellator was willing to give The Ultimate Fighter alumnus.

Riddle' signed a contract with Texas-based promotion Legacy Fighting Championships in March, which Bellator bought out in May before he fought for Legacy FC.

The 27-year-old, who has all 12 of his professional fights contested under the UFC banner, was released by the world’s premiere mixed martial arts organization after failing two drug test for marijuana during an eight-month span during 2012.

Riddle hasn’t competed since February, a convincing decision win over Che Mills that was overturned by his second failed drug test, and has not publicly commented on his release from Bellator as of Tuesday evening.
