Despite being regarded as one of the all-time classic battles inside the Octagon, fellow UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard was anything impressed by Diego Sanchez vs. Gilbert Melendez at UFC 166 last weekend.
Speaking to MMA Junkie, “The Young Assassin” seemed unimpressed by the punching power of his divisional foes, taking particular aim at Sanchez.
"I would have dropped either one of them," Guillard said. "I used to drop Diego Sanchez in practice all the time. When I hit people, I hurt people. That's just what I do."
Guillard and Sanchez used to be teammates at Greg Jackson’s MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but Guillard moved to the Boca Raton, Florida’s “Blackzilian” team briefly before finding his latest home at the nearby American Top Team.
To the 30-year-old’s credit, 20 of his 31 professional victories have come by way of knockout.
However, one could argue that the always confident Guillard isn’t really in a position to be trash talking too many fighters at 155 pounds, given that he is just 2-4 in his past six bouts.
Nevertheless, the 46-fight veteran has a big opportunity in front of him this Saturday at UFC Fight Night 30, where he faces another heavy-handed striker in Ross Pearson.
“The Real Deal” has scored back-to-back TKO’s at lightweight after a brief two-fight stint (1-1 record) at 145 pounds.
Win or lose on Saturday, would a Guillard vs. Sanchez matchup make sense from a fan’s perspective sometime in the near future?
