Mentor: Georges St-Pierre Should Retire In the Cage After UFC 167 Victory

Kristof Midoux, one of UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s earliest mentors, believes the French-Canadian superstar should retire in the cage after scoring a decisive win over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 on Saturday.

According to an interview with Canadian media outlet La Presse, Midoux believes “Rush” will have nothing else to prove with a clear cut victory over Hendricks.

“I told him ‘After this one, it’s over! Shine on that night. Finish that dude in front of everyone. Shut your detractors up,” Midoux said.

“If you finish that guy, if you knock him out, then you’ll be free, you’ll be happy to take the microphone and to say that you’re done. To say that you are giving your place to others.”

Midoux indicated that GSP has told him he would like to have a wife and kids someday, something the trainer doesn’t believe will be possible much longer for the 32-year-old French-Canadian fighter.

He also hinted that it was time for St-Pierre to pass the torch to 24-year-old Tristar gym teammate Rory MacDonald, who boasts a five-fight win streak and is already a top contender at 170 pounds.

A win over Hendricks would give GSP 12 straight victories, including nine title defenses, one shy of former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva’s record.

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, St-Pierre said he may retire in a week, or it could take as long as 10 years, all he knows for sure is “that he loves his job” and is really happy where he’s at in his career now.

Will UFC 167 be the last hurrah for one of the greatest champions in UFC history or does the French-Canadian superstar still have a ton of good fights left in him?
