Despite being just 2-3 in her past five fights, former UFC women’s bantamweight title challenger Miesha Tate is ready to get back in the title hunt.
And in the event she isn’t on the cusp of another championship bout, “Cupcake” wants another crack at unbeaten contender Cat Zingano.
Tate is still sour over the way their April 2013 encounter ended, based on her comments on the latest edition of MMA Junkie Radio.
"Beating (Rin Nakai) is definitely a step in the right direction for me. But I don't know exactly where that puts me,” Tate said on the show.
“I hope it means I'm getting closer to a title shot one more time, and if that's good enough, I'll take the title shot. If not, I'd like to face Cat Zingano again."
After suffering back-to-back losses to Zingano and current UFC titleholder Ronda Rousey, Tate has since rebounded with a solid victory over another ex-title challenger in Liz Carmouche at UFC on FOX 11 in April.
Although her recent record isn’t that pretty, two of the losses came against the seemingly unstoppable Rousey, so Tate remains the No. 2 female 135-pounder in the UFC’s official rankings.
While she is a favorite, Tate at UFC Fight Night 52 this weekend, she faces a very dangerous opponent in Nakai – who boasts a rarely-seen unbeaten record of 16-0-1.
In fairness, the Japanese grappler has never competed in a North American-based promotion and will be making her UFC debut on Saturday.
In the event that Tate can get her hand raised on Saturday, would a part II with Zingano make the most sense?
