Looks like fate didn’t want to wait much longer to see Miesha Tate vs. Ronda Rousey II.
On Tuesday evening, Yahoo! Sports broke the story that UFC women’s bantamweight number one contender Cat Zingano underwent ACL surgery and would not be able to coach season 18 of “The Ultimate Fighter” opposite dominant champ Ronda Rousey.
Filling in for her will be Miesha Tate, a former Strikeforce champion, who lost to Zingano by TKO in a title eliminator bout at “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 17 Finale in April.
Tate first fought Rousey for the women’s Strikeforce strap in March 2012, eventually succumbing to the Olympic-level Judoka’s signature armbar at the end of the first round.
Due to the bad blood that exists between Rousey and Tate, as well as the fact that Tate had some offense early in the bout, “Cupcake” seemed like the only logical replacement for Zingano on short notice.
Tate was originally scheduled to meet Liz Carmouche, who lost to Rousey in the first women’s fight in the UFC back in February, at UFC on FOX 8. No replacement has been named for Carmouche as of Wednesday afternoon.
Initial filming of TUF, which will air on the FOX Sports 1 network starting September 1, began on Tuesday and Rousey reportedly stormed off set when she saw Tate, thinking she was replacing her.
UFC President Dana White kept Zingano’s injury, which she sustained back on May 16, under tight wraps and filled Rousey in on the situation backstage.
At the conclusion of the show, Tate will fight Rousey for her UFC belt. Tate will be the fourth fighter in 2013 to fight for a title coming off a loss.
The others are Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 in April, Nick Diaz at UFC 158 in March and Frankie Edgar at UFC 156 in February.
