Former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate has stated she would not fighter transgendered female competitor Fallon Fox.

Fox said as much in an interview with ESPN Monday evening, indicating that her main concern in the hypothetical scenario is safety and nothing more.

"I wouldn't do it," Tate told ESPN.com. "If there was solid research that [proved] she's 100 percent like a female, then I might consider it.”

"I have nothing against transgender people. You should live your life however you want. It's about fighter safety. I wouldn't feel comfortable getting in with someone who is a woman but developed as a man. I just don't think it would be safe."

Fox has become a hot topic in the MMA world when earlier in the month Sports Illustrated revealed that her fighter’s license is under review by the Florida State Boxing Commission.

The commission revealed that Fox did not disclose she underwent gender reassignment therapy in 2006, while Fox argues there was no such requirement listed on the application.

Fox is 2-0 as a professional and 3-0 as an amateur, though her career is currently on hold as she awaits the ruling from the commission.

Tate, who signed a UFC contract shortly after Strikeforce folded in January, has a 13-3 professional record, winning seven of her past eight contests.

Her sole loss came at the hands of current UFC bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey, winning the Strikeforce title from Tate in March 2012.

In all fairness “Cupcake” has not completely ruled out a bout with Fox, but she feels there are a number of scientific questions that remain unanswered.

“I just have a lot of questions and I don't feel there's been enough research to safely say it's OK for Fallon Fox to fight other females. My concern is that she went through puberty as a man. Does that change bone density? Does it change her body frame?”

"I think she has broader shoulders than most [females]. Her hips look different than most females. I'm sure her hands [and feet] are probably bigger. I'm not a medical expert, but there are things I've noticed that are not typical of most female fighters."

Tate is set to meet Cat Zingano at the season 17 finale of “The Ultimate Fighter” next month, with the winner set to coach the next season of TUF opposite Rousey.
