MMA News: UFC/WEC Veteran Diego Nunes Signs with Bellator

Former UFC and WEC featherweight Diego Nunes has signed with Bellator.

“Bellator fighter!” was the tweet Nunes wrote early Sunday morning and Brazilian media outlet Ataque Total later confirmed the news with anonymous Bellator officials.

After posting a perfect record (11-0) on the regional MMA scene in Brazil, “The Gun” took his talents to the WEC, going 4-1, including a win over surging 135-pound UFC contender Rafael Assuncao.

However, Nunes never lived up to his potential inside the Octagon, only winning two of his five appearances in the UFC.

Nunes was cut from the world’s premiere mixed martial arts organization after a lopsided decision loss to Nik Lentz at UFC on FX 7 in January, getting outwrestled from start to finish.

The Brazilian enters one of the deepest divisions Bellator has to offer at 145-pounds, including champion Pat Curran, and past tournament winners Patricio “Pitbull” Freire, Daniel Strauss and Shahbulat Shamhalaev.

Nunes would likely be a welcome addition to the season 9 featherweight tournament in September, though details of his promotional debut are yet to be announced.

This marks the second signing of an ex-UFC fighter by Bellator in the past week, as they picked up former UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton "Rampage" Jackson last Tuesday.

Jackson's Wolfslair teammate, Cheick Kongo, was also reported to be picked up by Bellator hours later, but company Chairman/CEO Bjorn Rebney denied the claim. However, he hinted signing the former UFC heavyweight could be a possibility in the near future.
