Nate Diaz Goes Off on Fighter Pay Rant, Dana White Responds

Former UFC light title challenger Nate Diaz hasn’t fought since knocking out old rival Gray Maynard in November and doesn’t’ have a fight booked, either.

In an interview with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, the Stockton bad boy went off on a tangent regarding fighter pay:

“They need to be about more money. My contract is all (expletive) up. I want to be paid like these other fighters. I’m over here getting chump change.”

“I train harder than everybody in the UFC. And then there’s boxers out there getting multi-million dollar contracts, and I’m a bigger draw than boxers. It’s embarrassing. I think I’m the biggest draw in the lightweight division.”

While Diaz is a solid 4-2 at lightweight since September 2011, he lost pivotal matchups against then-champ Benson Henderson and perennial contender Josh Thomson.

His loss to Thomson at UFC on FOX 7 just under a year ago was the first time in his career Diaz was finished with strikes.

UFC President Dana White wasted little time in firing back at Diaz, stating outright that the Cesar Gracie jiu-jitsu black belt’s logic made no sense.

“Nate Diaz came in and signed a new deal and was very happy with his new deal,” White said. “If he would have (beat Henderson), his deal would have changed.

“Now he comes off a win over Gray Maynard (following the Henderson and Josh Thomson losses) and feels like he should be making Justin Bieber money. Nate needs to get back in there and start fighting.”

Back in late February, Diaz tweeted White asking for his release, deleting the post a short while later.

Despite the current discord between the scrappy 28-year-old fighter and the UFC, Diaz is regarded as the no. 6 in lightweight in the world, according to the UFC’s official rankings.
