Two former UFC light heavyweight champions are set to square off this fall, however, they will not meet inside the Octagon.
Bellator announced during their Bellator 97 event Wednesday night that Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will face off against Tito Ortiz in the headlining bout of their inaugural November second pay-per-view event.
After his UFC contract expired, Jackson ended up working up a deal with Bellator in early June, which also gives him the option to worth pro wrestling matches with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. Both Bellator and TNA Wrestling air on the Spike TV network.
Once one of the biggest stars in PRIDE, and later the UFC, the 35-year-old Jackson has seen better days as he’s currently in the midst of a three-fight losing streak; his last victory was over two years ago.
Ortiz, who is tied with Jon Jones for the UFC record of successful light heavyweight title defenses, has teased a comeback for weeks now and made it clear that Bellator was a potential suitor.
While “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy,” a UFC Hall of Famer, is one of the most recognized pioneers in the sport, it is indisputable that his best days inside the cage are behind him.
The 38-year-old has only won one fight since December 2006, posting a paltry 1-7-1 record between then and when he retired after UFC 148, which took place in July of last year.
Nevertheless, Jackson and Ortiz clearly have the most star power out of anyone on the Bellator roster, so to at least some extent, it makes sense for the promotion to roll the dice and see how a fight between the two veteran light heavyweights plays out.
