Report: Cheick Kongo Follows Teammate Quinton “Rampage” Jackson to Bellator

Bellator has nabbed two of the biggest names from Wolfslair MMA Academy in the span of just a few hours.

After announcing the signing of former UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson this morning, MMA Weekly is reporting that his teammate Cheick Kongo will be joining him as well.

Kongo was one of the longest tenured heavyweights in UFC history, with a respectable 11-6-1 record compiled over a nearly seven-year span.

A former Muay Thai and Savate champion, the well-versed striker could get little done against grappler like Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez.

Prior to his most recent loss to Roy Nelson, his second knockout loss in his past three fights, “The French Sensation” was working on negotiating a new contract with the UFC, but the two sides could not reach an agreement and Kongo decided to walk.

Just one month ago, Kongo dispelled rumors that he was released from the UFC, but left it open to interpretation as to what his next move was going to be.

“Don’t believe he said/she said stories. I have not been cut by the UFC,” Kongo wrote on his Facebook page. “I am Cheick Kongo, so I know best what’s next for me. It doesn’t mean that I am leaving the UFC. It doesn’t mean that I am staying. It means this is my life.”

While Kongo is arguably on the downside of his career at 38-years-old, he still has notable wins over Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Pat Barry and Matt Mitrione and Bellator’s heavyweight division is one of their weakest weight classes.
