If the report of the latest matchup for UFC 178 is accurate, the September 27 card, on paper, has to be one of the best in years.
Former WEC title challenger Donald Cerrone is being targeted to square off with Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at the pay-per-view event, according to Sherdog.
Cerrone, one of the most consistently entertaining fighters on the UFC roster, has been on a tear since he dropped a decision to contender Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night 27 11 months ago.
Since then, “Cowboy” has rattled off four straight wins (all finishes), most recently taking out perennial top 10 fighter Jim Miller at UFC Fight Night 45 two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Alvarez has won three matchups in a row, as well as nine of his past 10 bouts, avenging his defeat to Michael Chandler at Bellator 106 in November.
Chandler was in a well-documented contract dispute with Bellator for the better part of last year, finally coming to terms just under a year ago.
While “The Silent Assassin” was victorious in his return bout against Alvarez, he has one more fight under his Bellator contract so the matchup with Cerrone may not be a lock.
However, it’s worth noting that Alvarez’s contract issues took place when Bjorn Rebney was the Bellator CEO/President, who has since been ousted and replaced by former Strikeforce President Scott Coker.
UFC 178 already features a light heavyweight title bout between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, the return of ex-bantamweight titleholder Dominick Cruz against Takeya Mizugaki, a featherweight grudge match between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor, to name a few.
Despite the complicated contract situation, will Cerrone vs. Alvarez be added to this star studded card?
