Report: Joe Lauzon Withdraws From UFC 180 Bout with Diego Sanchez

All of a sudden it looks like UFC 180 is cursed after losing a heavyweight championship bout and a potential “Fight of the Year” candidate in just 24 hours.

Just one day after Cain Velasquez withdrew from a title fight with Fabricio Werdum due to a sprained MCL, the November 15 event has now lost what promised to be a massively entertaining lightweight scrappy between Joe Lauzon and Diego Sanchez.

MMA Junkie reported on Wednesday that “J-Lau” has pulled out of the potential slugfest for undisclosed reasons.

As of this writing, Lauzon, Sanchez and the UFC have not publicly addressed the situation.

Lauzon would’ve entered the matchup on the strength of a two-fight win streak, scoring a TKO over Michael Chiesa at UFC Fight Night 50 last month in a back-and-forth affair.

Meanwhile, Sanchez is just 1-2 in his past three fights, most recently scoring one of the most controversial split decisions in UFC history when he defeated Ross Pearson at UFC Fight Night 42 in June.

One of the winners from the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter, Sanchez is 2-2 after dropping down from welterweight in March 2013 – though hasn’t scored a truly impressive victory since he defeated Paulo Thiago at UFC 121 in October 2010.

With UFC 180 just over three weeks away, it remains yet to be scene if Sanchez would remain on the Mexico City pay-per-view in the event Lauzon can no longer compete.
