If the UFC has their way, there is going to be some blockbuster match ups in Dallas’ Cowboys Stadium after all.
With a potential superfight between UFC welterweight and middleweight champions Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva a near impossibility, the new plan is to have “The Spider” fight 205-pound kingpin Jon Jones.
The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer first reported the news on Thursday afternoon. Additionally, the rubber match between heavyweight titleholder Cain Velasquez and contender Junior dos Santos is slated to take place at the tentative event.
Meltzer says a date in mid-October appears likely, especially since hopes of the UFC making their debut in Madison Square Garden appear slim to none as MMA remains unsanctioned in the state of New York.
Of course, Jones vs. Silva hinges on the Brazilian emerging victorious in what would be his 11th successful title defense at 185-pounds against Chris Weidman at UFC 162 this July.
Weidman enters the match up a big underdog, as is the case with all of Silva’s foes, but has the grappling credentials to give the dominant champion problems inside the cage.
Velasquez vs. dos Santos III is inevitable after both hard-hitting heavyweights scored definitive knockouts at UFC 160 on Saturday.
Dos Santos rallied for a late knockout over “The Super Samoan” Mark Hunt, while Velasquez earned his second first round TKO victory over Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
Will a dream event at Cowboys Stadium actually come to fruition in 2013 or is this just another pipe dream that will never happen?
