Amidst a ton of speculation, UFC President Dana White has announced UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey’s next fight.
The “Rowdy” one will square off with Strikeforce import Alexis Davis at UFC 175 on July 5, likely serving as the co-main event of the evening.
White tweeted the news late Friday night:
“Ronda Rousey vs Alexis Davis Saturday, July 5th for the women’s bantamweight title in Las Vegas for International Fight Week!!!”
The fight announcement comes as a bit of a shock for fight fans as rumors swirled that the original female superstar of women’s MMA, Gina Carano, was going to sign with the UFC this week.
Both Rousey and White were in agreement Carano’s contributions to the sport should be enough to net her an immediate title shot, adding fuel to the fire that Rousey vs. Carano was coming any day now.
On top of that, Invicta FC featherweight champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino has been having a war with words with Rousey for months now, angling for a grudge match as soon as possible.
Then of course there’s top contender Cat Zingano, who remains undefeated and was expected to meet Rousey in December before suffering a torn ACL in May.
As it turns out, none of those women will get the next crack at Rousey, instead it will be Davis, the winner of five straight (three inside the Octagon).
Given the current landscape of the women’s bantamweight division in the UFC, was Rousey vs. Davis the fight to make?
