Two big fan favorites in the UFC have been suspended nine months after failing their UFC on FX 6 post-fight drug tests. MMA Weekly broke the news Thursday night.
Joey Beltran, a light heavyweight who initially won a unanimous decision over Igor Pokrajac at the event, tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone. As a result, his victory from last month has been overturned to a no contest.
While middleweight Rousimar Palhares, who suffered a knockout at the hands of Hector Lombard on the card, did not test positive for a particular performance enhancing drug, he did test positive for elevated levels of testosterone.
UFC officials released a statement on the failed drug tests:
“The UFC organization has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents,” read a statement released by UFC officials on Thursday.”
“Both athletes have agreed to serve a nine-month suspension retroactive to December 14. They must pass a drug test upon completion of the suspension before receiving clearance to compete again.”
No word on if either fighter will be cut following the failed drug test, but Beltran is just 1-3-1 in his past four fights while “Toquinho” has suffered two consecutive knockouts for the first time in his career.
Since UFC on FX 6 took place in Gold Coast Queensland, Australia, the UFC served as their own athletic commission for the event.
Do Beltran and Palhares deserve a pink slip for their positive drug tests or do they deserve at least one more chance inside the Octagon?
