Former UFC competitor Rousimar Palhares is probably having the worst week of his life since becoming a professional fighter.
First, he wasn’t awarded a “Submission of the Night” bonus for cranking a heel hook on Mike Pierce at last week’s UFC Fight Night 20, with the UFC citing “unsportsmanlike conduct.”
Then, less than 24 hours later, “Toquinho” was released from his UFC contract since this was his second offense inside the Octagon since 2010.
After that, the hulking Brazilian was suspended for 120 days by the Brazilian athletic commission overseeing the event hosted in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Even the UFC’s lead competition, Bellator Fighting Championships, came out to say they wanted nothing to do with the highly-regarded Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.
With all that in mind, the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission World Wrestling Championship has ruled Palhares out of this year’s event this weekend, the premiere no-gi grappling event in the world.
Funny enough, the scratch is not because of the recent scrutiny over the BJJ-based fighter, but actually because he did not return several messages and calls inquiring if he still wanted to participate in the tournament after just having a fight, MMA Fighting reported.
The 33-year-old earned his spot in the tournament by taking second place in 2011 (there was no ADCC tourney in 2012), winning three straight bouts by heel hook before losing to Andre Galvao by a score of 4-9.
However, even that day was not all glory for Palhares, as a ton of controversy ensued after he cranked a heel hook on David Avellan in the quarterfinals after his opponent had tapped out, badly injuring his knee in the process.
Will Palhares find his way back into mainstream combat sports after his universally panned win over Pierce or will all this negative publicity ensure he ends up working in a different field?
