While UFC officials remain confident that Visa issues will not prevent Mark Hunt from fighting Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC 160 later this month, it never hurts to have a back-up plan.
On FUEL TV’s UFC Tonight Tuesday, Ariel Helwani reported that resurgent heavyweight contender Roy Nelson is being pegged to fight JDS should the worst case scenario happen and Hunt is unable to travel to the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.
Helwani indicated that the Nevada State Athletic Commission plans to talk over Nelson’s fight application in a meeting scheduled for Friday, although “Big Country” has not accepted the fight yet.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Hunt has been unable to travel from his native New Zealand due to complications from an undisclosed 2002 arrest.
On a media conference call from Tuesday, both the “Super Samoan” and a UFC official stated they still fully expect Hunt to compete on the May 25 pay-per-view (via MMA Fighting).
"A stupid misunderstanding, that's all it is, really," Hunt said. "It was just something that happened a long time ago, and it should be cleaned up, I should be clear to fly sometime tomorrow, tonight, whenever."
UFC Director of Public Relations Dave Sholler followed up by stating he is "confident that the issue will be resolved."
Hunt is the winner of four straight bouts, finishing three of his opponents via knockout, while Nelson is currently boasts three first round knockouts in a row.
Should Nelson end up squaring off with “Cigano,” it would be his second action inside the Octagon inside a month.
The plus-sized fan favorite last competed at UFC 159 on April 27, where it took him just over two minutes to put away accomplished kickboxer Cheick Kongo.
JDS and Nelson fought before at UFC 117 in August 2010, losing a one-sided unanimous decision, though he showed the heart and chin fans have come to know and love, continuing to come forward after eating one big shot after another.
