Roy Nelson vs. Daniel Cormier Booked for UFC 166 Co-Main Event

Looks like everything really is bigger is Texas.

Two hard-hitting heavyweights, Roy Nelson and Daniel Cormier, collide in the co-main event of UFC 166, set to take place on October 19 in Houston. The Houston Chronicle first reported the news late Monday evening.

The winner of the bout will be on the short list to fight the winner of the evening’s main event, a heavyweight title bout between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez.

Last week, “DC” tweeted a photo of a mock contract written out on notebook paper, which he signed and sent Nelson’s way via the social network.

“Big Country” was quick to respond, signing the contract and imploring the UFC to book the fight after the two top 10 heavyweights had been calling each other out for weeks.

After ending their Twitter beef with an innovative idea, looks like matchmaker Joe Silva finally gave into the requests.

Nelson was on a tear heading into his UFC 161 bout with Stipe Miocic, scoring three first-round knockouts dating back to May 2012, but his momentum was derailed as he was soundly out-struck by the rising Croatian star last month.

That bout was the last one on Nelson’s contract and many in the fight game speculated that the pot-bellied power puncher may be getting a lucrative offer from Bellator, the UFC’s top competitor.

It seems that rumor never came to fruition though, with the Renzo Gracie black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu stating that he plans to finish his career inside the Octagon.

Meanwhile, he faces one of the hottest prospects in the sport in Cormier, the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner who is a perfect 12-0 as a professional mixed martial artist.

Cormier made his UFC debut at UFC on FOX 7 in April, scoring a lopsided decision victory over former heavyweight champ Frank Mir.

Will Nelson be able to connect with his famed right hand or will Cormier’s world class wrestling and quickness be too much for him to handle?
