On Saturday night, the UFC hosted The Ultimate Fighter Season 17 Finale at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The event of course saw the latest TUF winner crowned, though it wasn’t the man many fans and analysts pegged to win.
Additionally, UFC women’s bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey saw her next title challenger named after an incredibly exciting “Fight of the Night” between two of the top female fighters in the world.
Check out the biggest loser and winners from the TUF 17 Finale this weekend.
BIGGEST WINNER
Cat Zingano - “Alpha” looked like she was just a precursor to a rematch between Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey after two rounds of her title eliminator fight with Tate Saturday evening.
However, Zingano went for broke in the third round and stopped “Cupcake” after a brutal series of knees and an elbow strike midway through the final frame.
While the stoppage may have not been the best, Zingano proved she is one of the best in the world and has a chance to coach The Ultimate Fighter opposite Rousey before getting her title shot. Oh, and she’s still undefeated at 8-0, a better mark than the champion.
WINNER
Kelvin Gastelum – The perennial underdog from this season of TUF managed to complete his Cinderella story by upsetting knockout artist Uriah Hall in the finals.
Despite getting hit with heavy strikes at certain points in the fight, the undefeated grappler refused to relent with his pressure and takedowns and did enough to earn the split decision win and a $100,000 contract with the UFC.
WINNER
Urijah Faber – The face of Team Alpha Male notched the 16th submission of his career against former training partner and friend Scott Jorgensen in the main event.
While Jorgensen was a game opponent, “The California Kid’s” grappling was overwhelming. While many fans no longer have any interest in seeing Faber fight for UFC gold again, it’s undeniable he’s still one of the sport’s best at 135-pounds.
WINNER
Clint Hester – While there were a number of spectacular finishes from this card, Hester’s standing elbow knockout over Bristol Marunde was simply incredible.
Despite coming up short in this season’s edition of TUF, Hester has now quietly won four fights in a row (with three knockouts) and looks to be a rising prospect at 26-years-old.
BIGGEST LOSER
Miesha Tate – A “Fight of the Night” bonus doesn’t mean much when Tate gave the fight with Cat Zingano away in the third round.
Granted, the stoppage was controversial, but Tate-Rousey II went from a forgone conclusion to completely unfathomable in one slick striking sequence from Zingano.
LOSER
Uriah Hall – Just days ago, it seemed obscene for anyone to even think Kelvin Gastelum could defeat Uriah Hall at the TUF Finale.
However, that’s exactly what happened. While Gastelum was vastly underestimated, Hall simply did not show up when it mattered the most. Luckily, his marketability and flashy striking should be enough to earn him at least one more fight in the Octagon.
LOSER
Bart Palaszewski – The 29-year-old deserves his due for notching 36 career victories in an incredible 53 professional fights, but he just isn’t able to complete at the highest level anymore.
“Bartimus” essentially tapped out to a face crank and while Cole Miller is a very talented grappler, Palaszewski has now lost four of his past five fights. A trip back to the regional scene could do the knockout artist some good.
LOSER
Gabriel Gonzaga – The fourth degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt was riding a three-fight win streak heading into his fight with Travis Browne, only to be brutally knocked out with elbows in just over a minute.
Gonzaga has now been knocked out in six of his seven professional losses and has shown he can’t win fights standing. “Napao” will never be more than a gatekeeper in the UFC’s heavyweight division based on this performance.
