UFC president Dana White knows UFC welterweight title contender Nick Diaz isn’t reliable and wasn’t afraid to say so during a post “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 16 Finale media press conference.
MMA Fight Corner had the video handy Saturday night:
"There's no guarantees with Nick Diaz," said White. "I got nine welterweights on the show that are all in the top five, so if he falls out, we'll still have a GSP fight."
When Diaz vs. St-Pierre were initially set to meet at UFC 137, Diaz lost his opportunity to fight for the belt when he no-showed consecutive media appearances for the event. Diaz instead ended up fighting BJ Penn on the card, winning via unanimous decision.
In addition to the welterweight title fight, UFC 158 also boasts bouts between divisional contenders Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit, as well as Johny Hendricks and Jake Ellenberger (White appears to have either misspoke or have two other welterweight match ups ready to be announced soon.)
Hendricks made a strong campaign for a title shot at the event, riding a five-fight win streak that includes wins over perennial contenders Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch and Martin Kampmann.
Ultimately, the French-Canadian champion decided he had a grudge to settle with Diaz and White was more than happy to grant his request.
Given the past indiscretions of Diaz, who is currently serving a Nevada State Athletic Commission issued suspension for testing positive for marijuana metabolites, it is completely possible that St-Pierre vs. Hendricks happens sooner than anyone expected.
