After Frankie Edgar lost to UFC Lightweight Champion' Benson Henderson for the second time in a row, many fans and analysts are calling it academic that the former 155-pound champion drop down to featherweight.
First of all, let’s address the elephant in the room: there’s no way anyone who follows and understands the sport of mixed martial arts honestly believes that Benson Henderson should have retained his title on Saturday night.
While Edgar clearly won rounds two, four and five, two of the three judges overseeing the event inexplicably didn’t see it that way and Henderson won an undeserved split decision.
Even with the consecutive losses to “Bendo”, there is no need for Frankie Edgar to drop down to 145 pounds if he doesn’t want to. The main reason Edgar doesn’t need to cut any extra weight just yet is simple: no one at lightweight besides Henderson has the tools to beat Edgar.
Name just about any other fighter at 155 pounds and Edgar has a marked advantage in either the speed, cardio, boxing or grappling department. His ability to take punishment also just about guarantees no one has the power to keep Frankie from constantly coming forward.
As a lightweight, Edgar still owns quality wins over Jim Miller, Sean Sherk, Penn and Maynard. Even in his first encounter with the former WEC Lightweight Champion, it wasn’t like Henderson completely outclassed Edgar.
No one’s trying to say Frankie Edgar vs Jose Aldo for the featherweight title wouldn’t be one for the record books, but that time isn’t right now. If Edgar can take out two top 10 lightweights in a row, there’s no reason why he can’t compete for the UFC lightweight title at least one more time.
