UFC 151 Cancelled After Henderson Withdraws and Jones Refuses Fight with Sonnen

Rumors began to swirl on various MMA news outlets Wednesday night that Dan Henderson would be forced out of his UFC 151 light heavyweight title fight with Jon Jones due to a knee injury, with Lyoto Machida being the most logical replacement.

However, in an impromptu press conference Thursday afternoon, UFC President Dana White revealed that Henderson was indeed injured, but also dropped a bomb no one was expecting: UFC 151 was being cancelled altogether.

“Bones” was offered an opportunity to fight former two-time UFC middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen, who planned to return to the 205-pound division on Dec. 29 against Forrest Griffin, but Jones declined the offer.

Instead, Jones vs. Machida II now takes place on Sept. 22 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

White had no sympathy for Jones or his head trainer, Greg Jackson, when addressing the media (quotes courtesy of Bleacher Report):

“Greg Jackson told Jones there's no way you take the Chael Sonnen fight on eight days notice. Said it would be the biggest mistake of his career. Greg Jackson is a f***ing sport killer. I've never heard anything like this in my entire life.”

“The first fight cancelled in UFC history and the first champion to ever turn down a match. That's how Jones will be viewed.”

White also called the decision to cancel the event “one of my all time lows” and added that “me and (UFC CEO Lorenzo) Fertitta are both disgusted.”

Sonnen has been having a field day since the press conference, continuing his feud with Jones on Twitter (http://twitter.com/sonnench) and calling him out on various media outlets, including ESPN’s Sportscenter.

As if Sonnen wasn’t enough to deal with on his own, Jones’ Twitter (http://twitter.com/JonnyBones) has also been swarmed with fellow fighters and fans criticizing his decision to not fight Sonnen.

Did Jones actually make the smart decision or the selfish one in choosing not to fight “The American Gangster” on eight days notice?
