Another UFC card has taken a major hit due to main card fighters suffering serious injuries and being forced to withdraw from the card.
UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, who was set to headline UFC 153 against former lightweight title holder Frankie Edgar, has pulled out of the event with a foot injury.
Hours earlier, it was announced that UFC 153 co-headliner Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, who was scheduled to fight rising contender Glover Teixeira, would not fight on the card due to an injured elbow.
UFC President Dana White announced both of the mishaps on his Twitter (http://twitter.com/danawhite) Tuesday afternoon.
At 3:22 p.m. Eastern Time, White tweeted: “Rampage is hurt and out of UFC 153 RIO. SUCKS!!!!!!”
Shortly afterwards, at 5:06 p.m. Eastern Time, White let the Twitter world know that: “Now Aldo is out with foot injury. Main and co main in the same day!! Another amazing day at the UFC. We have some work to do”
Fight fans thought they hit the lottery on Aug. 31 when it was announced that Edgar would make his featherweight debut against Aldo on the card scheduled to take place at the champion’s native Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Erik Koch was going to be the original title challenger, but was forced out of the bout with an undisclosed injury. “New Breed’s” luck has been absolutely terrible recently, as he was initially penciled in to fight Aldo in the main event of UFC 149.
However, that bout didn’t come to fruition when “Scarface” suffered an injury weeks before the event.
As of Tuesday evening, it is unknown whether or not Edgar or Teixeira will sign up to fight a new opponent or if they will be forced off the card completely. UFC 153 is scheduled for Oct. 13 at the HSBC Arena.
