No division in the UFC seems to have as many questions as the middleweight division.
With champion Anderson Silva’s reluctance to fight contender Chris Weidman, pundits are looking to other weight classes for the next title challenger at 185-pounds.
Looks like UFC president Dana White is doing the same thing, stating that former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans could face Silva next, according to a recent interview with MMA Junkie.
"I would consider Rashad," White said. "If Rashad won on Saturday night and wanted to go to 185, we would consider that."
Evans takes on former PRIDE star Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 156 this evening, entering the bout as a massive favorite. “Lil’ Nog” is a decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, but has struggled with wrestlers in the past such as Ryan Bader and Phil Davis.
Should “Suga” walk away with a comfortable victory as many are predicting, White certainly didn’t seem upset about the idea of Evans dropping down a weight class to challenge “The Spider.”
"A lot of people think Chris Weidman is the No. 1 contender right now," White said. "If Rashad made a move from 205 down to 185, it'd be safe to say he's now No. 1."
Weidman, who is a perfect 9-0 as a professional mixed martial artist, is coming off of an impressive knockout over fellow contender Mark Munoz back in July.
A shoulder injury and the subsequent surgery to repair the damage has kept him on the sidelines since then but he has been vocal about the fact he deserves a chance to dethrone Silva.
Ed Soares, Silva’s manager, has said time and time again that he isn’t interested in the Weidman fight since he lacks star power.
Will Evans leapfrog Weidman and be the next competitor to square off with Silva or is his long talked about drop to middleweight never going to happen?
