UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been the butt of countless Chael Sonnen jokes leading up to their title bout at UFC 159, but “Bones” went on the offensive Monday night.
The Greg Jackson’s MMA standout blasted “The American Gangster” on Twitter, implying that steroid abuse is what led to Sonnen’s need to use testosterone replacement therapy at this point in his career.
“Take steroids in your prime testosterone levels drop then you take TRT to get in your prime again.. Maybe I should just join the team $$$,” Jones tweeted.
Just in case there was any doubt that Jones was talking about Sonnen, an earlier Tweet posted an interview Sonnen did last year with Sherdog.com regarding performance-enhancing drugs in MMA.
Well, to put it lightly, Jones doesn’t believe that the former Olympic-level wrestler suffers from hypogonadism, which is a medial condition that can limit the body’s production of testosterone.
“If he really has hypogonadism, as he claims, why did he wait until 2008 to get injectable Testosterone? Over 20 years of hypogonadism and you wait until 2008...,” he wrote.
Following his first failed middleweight title bid against UFC champ Anderson Silva at UFC 117 in Aug. 2010, Sonnen failed his post-fight drug test due to elevated levels of testosterone.
While Sonnen argued his only wrongdoing was failing to properly disclose his TRT-usage with the California State Athletic Commission, he still received a one-year suspension from the commission, which he served from June 2010 until June 2011.
Sonnen and Jones are set to clash on April 27 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, despite the fact Sonnen hasn’t fought at light heavyweight since October 2005.
The question now is not a matter of if Sonnen will fire back at Jones, but when?
