UFC 160 Results: The Biggest Winners and Losers

The UFC returned to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night, where Cain Velasquez once again dominated Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in the headlining heavyweight title fight.

On the same card, Junior dos Santos proved he is one of the elite fighters in the game, knocking out a very game, durable Mark Hunt with a spectacular finishing sequence. Now, dos Santos vs. Velasquez III is the only championship bout that makes sense.

Additionally, the next UFC lightweight challenger was determined and a 205-pound contender again showed his hype is for real.

Let’s look at who the biggest winners and losers from the Octagon were on Saturday evening.

BIGGEST WINNER

Junior dos Santos – Few competitors in the fight game can say they lost the championship strap, won a fight, and then had a chance to contend for the belt again.

However, given dos Santos’ incredible finish of Mark Hunt, coupled with his history with current heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, it’s hard to argue “Cigano” is elite.

Known for his boxing, JDS dropped “The Super Samoan” with a spinning heel kick late in their three-round fight before rendering him unconscious with a single strike on the ground. JDS-Velasquez III should be one for the record books.

WINNER

TJ Grant – It seemed like a forgone conclusion that Gray Maynard would get a title fight with lightweight champ Benson Henderson before the end of the year, but TJ Grant made sure that fight would not be coming to fruition.

Grant improved to 5-0 at 155-pounds when he scored a brutal technical knockout over the former two-time title challenger in the opening frame. Grant is for real, so “Bendo” may have his hands full in his next championship bout.

WINNER

Khabib Nurmagomedov - The Russian grappling expert improved to 4-0 under the UFC banner (and 20-0 overall) when he put on a wrestling clinic against a severely outmatched Abel Trujillo at UFC 160.

While the fans didn’t always appreciate the mat work, Nurmagomedov set a UFC record with an unheard of 21 successful takedowns. “The Eagle” is long overdue for a top 10 fighter in his next match up.

WINNER

Cain Velasquez – American Kickboxing Academy’s star athlete did exactly what everyone expected him to do: knockout Antonio Silva early in the first round.

Velasquez’s striking looked much improved, an aspect of his game that could be a big factor when he encounters Junior dos Santos in a rubber match later this year.

BIGGEST LOSER

Mark Hunt – After winning four straight fights, Hunt needed to add a big name to his resume before he could get the winner of Velasquez-Silva II.

Unfortunately for the heavy-handed fan favorite, Junior dos Santos was too fast, too strong and too powerful to play into his game.

The brutal KO is a big setback for Hunt, whose clock is ticking at 39-years-old. A match up with Roy Nelson makes sense and would be a big crowd pleaser.

LOSER

Antonio Silva – After suffering a brutal beatdown to Velasquez last May, it was tough to justify “Bigfoot” getting another big opportunity, even after knocking out big names in Travis Browne and Alistair Overeem.

Well, Silva may not have been a bloody mess this time, but he lasted less than half the time he did in his first bout with Velasquez at UFC 146. Bigfoot is probably a top five contender at heavyweight, but he just isn’t quite good enough to become the champ.

LOSER

Gray Maynard – Despite entering Saturday night with a 1-1-1 record in his past three fights, “The Bully” had the chance to challenge for the UFC lightweight title for a third time if he could get passed TJ Grant.

Maynard never had a chance to utilize his superior wrestling as he got his clock cleaned by Grant early in the fight and was never given a chance to recover. Maynard is getting dangerously close to gatekeeper status at 155-pounds.

LOSER

KJ Noons – A former Elite XC champion, the always fan-friendly striker has lost three in a row and has only tasted victory once in his past six fights after getting dominated by Donald Cerrone on Saturday.

While his karate, boxing and kickboxing can allow him to hang with just about any striker, his lack of grappling has caught up to him as higher-level opponent have no problem controlling him on the ground.
