Looks like the legendary Mauricio Rua’s best days are long behind him, after he suffered the quickest, and one of the most brutal, knockouts of his career at UFC Fight Night 56 Saturday night.
Ovince St. Preux signed up to fight “Shogun” on just a week-and-a-half notice, after Jimi Manuwa withdrew from the bout due to an undisclosed injury suffered during training.
The high-risk, high-reward scenario paid off for OSP, as he dropped the former PRIDE/UFC champion with a left hook and he looked to score big with an overhand right hand.
Before he could even consider recovering, the former University of Tennessee linebacker swarmed Rua with ground-and-pound, giving referee Mario Yamasaki no choice but to call it a fight after just 34 seconds of action.
St. Preux deservingly earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his slick knockout over one of MMA’s most notable stars.
OSP has now won six of his past seven fights and has inarguably earned another marquee fight when he returns to the Octagon in 2015.
Shockingly, Rua is now just 6-8 inside the Octagon, suffering losses in four of his past five bouts.
The once feared Brazilian striker said he is undecided in what his plans are for the foreseeable future, but those plans should certainly not include fighting inside the cage if Saturday is any indication of what Rua has left in the tank.
