UFC Hall of Famer Stephan Bonnar Signs with Bellator, Eyes Fight with Tito Ortiz

Another member of the UFC Hall of Fame joins the ranks of Bellator MMA after enjoying retirement for an extended period of time.

Original Ultimate Fighter finalist Stephan Bonnar will join the light heavyweight ranks of Bellator after over 22 months of retirement from the sport, the promotion announced on Wednesday.

“I want everyone to know I'm coming out of retirement because it's time to free the MMA world of the virus that's known as Tito Ortiz,” Bonnar said in a prepared statement.

“We've been suffering through his boring fights for too many years, and it's about time that someone beats it out of him once and for all."

The fan-friendly slugger retired after a lop-sided TKO loss to then-UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva in October 2012. The bout was contested at 205 pounds.

“The American Psycho” then decided to call it a career after 23 professional fights, with a respectable 3-1 mark in his four previous matchups.

As expected, Bellator CEO Scott Coker gushed about the company’s latest signing.

“Stephan is a guy that has been a huge part of this sport and we are excited have him part of the roster,” Coker said in a written statement.

“ … When you look at our Light Heavyweight division, with names like Rampage, Tito, King Mo, Emanuel Newton and others, there are a lot of fights Stephan can be involved in. Big fights against big names.”

As for Ortiz, the self-proclaimed “People’s Champ” returned to the cage in May after a 22-month retirement of his own.

Despite a putrid 1-7-1 mark in his past nine fights, Ortiz had no problem submitting Bellator middleweight titleholder Alexander Shlemenko via submission at Bellator 120.

The bout was contested at light heavyweight.

Will Bonnar vs. Ortiz be a big grudge match for Bellator or are both fighters past their primes and irrelevant at this point?
