In a tragic turn of events, UFC heavyweight Shane Del Rosario is on life support after suffering “sudden cardiac arrest” in his California home on Tuesday.
MMA Fighting quotes del Rosario’s manager, Jason House, as saying that his client has a "very, very, very slim chance" of surviving and would need "a miracle."
House issued a prepared statement to members of the media on Wednesday.
"Shane had a catastrophic cardiovascular collapse at home on Tuesday morning," House wrote. "He was brought to the hospital in full cardiac arrest. He was resuscitated in the emergency room back to a stable heart rhythm and blood pressure."
Sherdog reported that UFC flyweight Ian McCall, del Rosario’s roommate, found the 30-year-old on the floor and responded by calling 911 and administering CPR.
"My brother friend and teammate is not gone yet no matter what you have heard! Pray for him," McCall tweeted on Thursday.
Friday morning will mark 72 hours since doctors at the Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, California administered treatment to del Rosario, at which point his family will decide whether or not to take him off life support.
After finding success as kickboxer, the California native successfully made his MMA debut in August 2006.
He started his career a perfect 11-0, all stoppages, but a serious car accident in May 2011 kept him out of action for about a year.
The heavy-handed strikers, with an underrated submission game, never managed to find success inside the Octagon, suffering TKO losses to Stipe Miocic and Pat Berry.
Del Rosario was set to return to the cage next month at UFC 168 against Guto Inocente, but the heavyweight fighter withdrew from the bout last week due to a rib injury.
