UFC News: Alistair Overeem Likely to Fight Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva at UFC 156

“The Demolition Man” is looking to make his return to the Octagon against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva Super Bowl weekend.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal first reported the story on Tuesday night, with the UFC later confirming that both fighters had verbally agreed to the both.

Overeem is still serving a nine-month suspension issued by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after a post-UFC 141 drug test revealed the hulking heavyweight had elevated testosterone levels.

“The Reem” defeated former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar via first round TKO at the event.

Once his suspension ends on Dec. 27, he must go before the NSAC to re-apply for his fighter’s license before he can return to the cage.

Dating back to Sept. 2007, Overeem is riding a 12-fight undefeated streak heading into the potential February bout.

After suffering back-to-back losses to American Kickboxing Academy teammates Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez, Bigfoot scored an upset TKO over Travis Browne at UFC on FX 5 last month.

Silva is just 1-2 in his past three fights, but is 4-2 in his past six outings in the cage. This bout could potentially become a title eliminator bout, as UFC president Dana White recently announced that he expects Overeem to be next in line for a heavyweight title shot.

Reigning heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos defends his belt at UFC 155 in a rematch with Cain Velasquez. JDS knocked out Velasquez to capture the belt at the inaugural UFC on FOX event in November.

Will Overeem’s K-1 level kickboxing be too much for the Brazilian or will Silva’s chin be able to withstand some big blows before the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt gets the fight to the ground and submits the Dutchman?
