While the winner of the inaugural season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Forrest Griffin, has a number of impressive wins on his resume, the image many fans think of when they hear his name is when he was brutally knocked out by Anderson Silva at UFC 101.

Despite the fight being contested at light heavyweight, the UFC middleweight champion made Griffin look slow and undisciplined. How is any of that relevant now?

On Ariel Helwani’s “The MMA Hour” Monday afternoon, Griffin admitted that he not only took the anti-anxiety medication, Xanax, prior to the Silva fight, but he also failed his post-fight drug test for it.

“I failed my drug test I think for Xanax," Griffin said. "I had a doctor's prescription, I was just, I didn't do it before the fight, I did it the night before, I was nervous and I couldn't sleep.”

Arguably the most interesting part of the story is that Griffin did not mention any suspension as a result of the failed drug test, nor did the UFC or the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission ever release that information.

Griffin competed three months later at UFC 106 in his second meeting against Tito Ortiz, which he won via split decision, so it seems safe to say that the 33-year-old received no sanctions for the failed drug test.

While this situation is certainly unique, MMA Fighting also points out that then-UFC lightweight Tyson Griffin failed a drug test after losing a split decision to Nik Lentz at UFC 123 in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Tyson Griffin, who has no relation to Forrest, served a three-month suspension for testing positive for marijuana. However, the suspension was not revealed until over a year later when the Xtreme Couture product mentioned it in an interview.
