UFC News: Heavyweight Lavar Johnson Cut Following Failed Drug Test

Hard-hitting heavyweight Lavar Johnson has been cut from the UFC following a post-UFC 157 drug test that showed elevated testosterone levels for the California native, MMA Junkie reports.

“Big” suffered a definitive unanimous decision loss to “The Ultimate Fighter” runner-up Brendan Schaub at the event, his second losing effort in a row after getting armbarred by Stefan Struve at UFC 146 in May.

Johnson was flagged for a testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio of 6.6 to 1, which the California State Athletic Commission said “was consistent with the administration of a steroid.”

The American Kickboxing Academy fighter told the CSAC prior to the event that he was using testosterone replacement therapy, but for whatever reason did not ask for a therapeutic use exemption.

Johnson has posted a 17-7 professional record with an impressive 15 knockouts, including UFC “Knockout of the Night” bonuses against Joey Beltran and Pat Berry, but has went just 2-4 in his past six fights.

He was also finished three times (two knockouts and one submission) during that span.

Additionally, Riki Fukuda, who competed at middleweight, was fired by the promotion after testing positive for banned stimulants following UFC on FUEL 8.

Fukuda blamed cold medicine as the reason for testing positive for phenylpropanolamine, norpseudoephedrine and ephedrine and posted  2-3 record inside the Octagon, alternating wins and losses, before getting cut.

Bantamweight Alex Caceres tested positive for marijuana metabolites after the same card and will now serve a nine-month suspension, face an undisclosed fine and participate in a drug rehabilitation program before he can fight again.

MMA Junkie was also the first media outlet to report the failed drug tests by Fukuda and Caceres.
