After an over 10-year hiatus from the Octagon, “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler returns to face former welterweight title challenger Josh Koscheck at UFC 157 in February. The Orange County Register first reported the news on Thursday.
Lawler, 19-9(1) fought his first 10 professional fights at welterweight, but since Oct. 2004, has fought at middleweight.
The Strikeforce veteran is a puzzling choice for Koscheck given that he has lost three of his past four fights and has struggled heavily with high-level grapplers throughout his career.
Koscheck, a four-time All-American wrestler at Edinboro University, boasts some of the best takedowns in the business and also possesses a black belt in David Camarillo’s Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu, a hybrid of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo.
A cast member of the original “Ultimate Fighter” series, Koscheck is just 2-2 in his past four bouts, though one loss was to welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre while the other was a controversial decision that went the way of fellow contender Johny Hendricks.
Koscheck had been campaigning on Twitter for a bout with top 10 fighters in Nick Diaz and Rory MacDonald, but Diaz will be fighting St-Pierre for the title at UFC 157. On the same, MacDonald will rematch Carlos Condit.
Does Lawler have any chance of scoring one of the flash knockouts that made him famous or will Koscheck make short work of him as expected?
