As expected, a top light heavyweight title contender is displeased to hear about Chael Sonnen fighting UFC’s 205-pound champion Jon Jones on April 27.
Former UFC light heavyweight title holder Lyoto Machida lashed out at Sonnen on Twitter regarding the title shot. “The Dragon” tweeted:
“With all respect, but for me Chael does not deserve The shot, I would like to know What He had done in LHW for deserve!!”
Machida has his crack at Jones at UFC 140 but was rendered unconscious with a standing guillotine choke in the second round after winning round 1.
Sonnen has not fought at light heavyweight for 7.5 years and is coming off of a second round TKO to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 148 in July. However, his verbal jabs at Jones have come to a head now that he is coaching season 17 of “The Ultimate Fighter” opposite “Bones” and will fight for the belt in April after the season airs.
The upcoming season will feature middleweights battling for the title of “The Ultimate Fighter.”
“Uncle Chael” was originally scheduled to return to the UFC’s light heavyweight division against former champion, as well as the original TUF winner, Forrest Griffin, at UFC 155, but that bout has been scrapped in favor of the Sonnen-Jones match up in the spring.
In an interview with MMA Fighting, Griffin took a few subtle shots at Sonnen over the latest news.
"I'm not mad at him," Griffin said, referencing Sonnen. "Why fight your way to the top when you can talk your way to the top?"
"I'm actually happy I'm not fighting him anymore, because watching his fights was boring and tedious," he added.
Fight fans: is the Jones-Sonnen match up a quality example of UFC matchmaking or a misguided attempt at getting ratings?
