UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has been linked to a super fight with UFC middleweight title holder Anderson Silva, but as it turns out, “The Spider’s” Black House teammate wants a piece of “Rush” as well.
“It would be an interesting karate duel but I don't know at what weight we would do it. If it is at 185lbs, I will go for it,” Machida said in an interview with GloboEsporte.com (translation by Fighter’s Only).
The fight would no doubt be a major draw for the UFC, but it’s tough to argue that the bout actually makes any sense: GSP is a career welterweight, while Machida is a career light heavyweight. That’s a significant 30-pound difference in weight classes.
UFC president Dana White, in an interview with MMA Junkie, was very direct in stating how he feels about a possible match up between Machida and St-Pierre.
"Where the f--- did that come from?" White said. "(St-Pierre) and Anderson (Silva) makes all the sense in the world. Him and Machida makes no sense whatsoever.
"Doesn't that kind of tell you something? Everyone was looking for that No. 1 contender's spot, and suddenly no one wants to be the No. 1 contender in the light-heavyweight division? Pretty interesting.”
Machida was initially linked to a rematch with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 152, but “The Dragon” declined the bout, indicating that he wanted a full fight camp before stepping into the cage with “Bones” again.
Jones ended up successfully defending his belt against Vitor Belfort at UFC 152.
In the same interview, White indicated that Dan Henderson was likely the next opponent for Machida, but offered few additional details. "We're still working it all out," he said.
Is there anyone out there that would prefer to see St-Pierre fight Machida at middleweight instead of a GSP-Silva superfight at a catchweight?
