Two high-profile middleweights will collide in the co-main event of UFC 159 in April to decide who still has a feasible shot of one day competing for UFC gold.
ESPN broke the news that Michael Bisping will be taking on Alan Belcher at the Newark, New Jersey event, hosted at the Prudential Center. The main event of the evening will be a light heavyweight title bout between champ Jon Jones and challenger Chael Sonnen.
Bisping is coming off a heart-breaking knockout loss to Vitor Belfort at UFX on FX 7 earlier in the month, a bout where he was guaranteed a shot at UFC middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva if he walked away victorious.
Prior to the loss, “The Count” had won five of his past six bouts, only dropping a razor-thin decision to Sonnen at UFC on FOX 2 last January.
Meanwhile, “The Talent” entered his UFC 155 bout against Yushin Okami on the strength of four straight wins, all finishes, only to get smothered for three rounds by the Japanese grappler.
The loser of this bout will head to the back of the line at 185-pounds and is all but guaranteed to never get beyond gatekeeper status.
Other fights announced for the same card include a light heavyweight tilt between contender Phil Davis and submission specialist Vinny Magalhaes, as well as a lightweight scrap between Jim Miller and Strikeforce import Pat Healy.
Will Bisping’s pin-point striking and exceptional submission defense be the difference maker or will Belcher’s heavy hands and vicious ground and pound earn him another highlight reel stoppage?
