A staple of the UFC’s lightweight division has decided that cutting a few pounds would be the best thing for his fight career.
Clay “The Carpenter” Guida announced Friday morning, via his management team, VFD Sports’ website, that he will be dropping down to 145-pounds after a whopping 42 fights at lightweight.
"The Carpenter is going to explore a new job site at the 145 pound division in the new year," Guida said in the statement. "I plan on making a run at the foreman or superintendent position right out of the gates. I hope you guys packed a lunch."
After winning four in a row between March 2010 and June 2011, Guida lost an action-packed title eliminator bout against Benson Henderson at the inaugural UFC on FOX card in November.
Guida than lost an uncharacteristically boring fight to Gray Maynard in June, refusing to engaged for five rounds, eventually prompting his decision to move down a weight class.
"It will be nice to finally be one of the bigger guys in the cage. I don't cut weight at 155, and making 145 will be no problem for me. My fans will get to see The Dude put some royal beatings on everyone in the division. I will not be satisfied until the Featherweight belt is mine," he said.
The Greg Jackson’s MMA product has earned notable wins over Bart Palaszewski, Josh Thompson, Anthony Pettis and current number one lightweight contender Nate Diaz.
However, he has also lost a number of key match ups against Kenny Florian, Tyson Griffin, Roger Huerta and Diego Sanchez, so it seemed clear that Guida was never destined to wear gold at 155-pounds.
Can Guida becomes one of the featherweight division’s elite or is he destined to be a gatekeeper for the rest of his career?
