“Rowdy” Ronda Rousey has parted ways with Strikeforce, where she won the women’s bantamweight title. However, it’s for a good reason: she’s the first female fighter to sign with the UFC.
Hollywood gossip website TMZ.com was the first media outlet to break the news Thursday night.
Rousey, a former Olympic bronze medalist in Judo, is 6-0 in mixed martial arts, winning each bout via a first round armbar.
Her most recent victory came over Sarah Kaufman in August, submitting the highly-regarded striker in just 54 seconds.
TMZ reports that the 25-year-old will likely defend the first women’s UFC title against Sara McMann, Cris “Cyborg” Santos or Miesha Tate.
Given that Santos has never fought below 145 pounds (bantamweight is 135 pounds), a rematch with Tate seems probable, especially given the tweet the former champion sent out last night:
“So Stoked to be fighting for the @UFC it's been a dream of mine for along time! SO happy it's finally come true :-D”
Rousey won the title from Tate in March, gruesomely dislocating the takedown specialist’s bicep with an armbar when Tate decided to endure the move for over 30 seconds before tapping out.
Given that Rousey, one of the cover models for this year’s edition of ESPN’s “The Body” issue, is one of the most marketable female athletes right now, how big is her addition to the UFC roster for the sport of MMA?
