UFC News: Shane Carwin Out, Matt Mitrione in Against Roy Nelson at TUF 16 Finale

The injury bug has bitten another high-profile UFC fight, but for now, the bout has been salvaged.

On Wednesday, UFC president Dana White tweeted that one of the head coaches for season 16 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Shane Carwin, had suffered a knee injury and would miss his scheduled December bout against fellow TUF head coach Roy Nelson.

“WOW!! It never ends Carwin blew his knee out. Looking for a new opponent for Roy on the TUF Finale on FX,” White said on Twitter.

However, just two days later, UFC officials have announced that Matt Mitrione, who was a contestant on season 10 of TUF along with “Big Country”, will fill the void. MMA Junkie was the first media outlet to report the news.

Mitrione lost in the quarterfinals, getting submitted by James McSweeney, while Nelson went on to knockout Brendan Schaub in the season finale in Dec. 2009.

“Meathead” was originally slated to meet Phil De Fries at UFC 155, scheduled for Dec. 29 in Las Vegas, but De Fries will now get a new opponent, according to MMA Junkie.

The TUF 16 Finale also takes place in Las Vegas, The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to be exact, on Dec. 15. Mitrione vs. Nelson will be the headlining bout for the FX-hosted card.

Additionally, while responding to a fan Twitter, White also revealed that Cheick Kongo was offered the fight with Nelson first but turned the opportunity down. Kongo last fought at UFC 149 in July, winning a lackluster decision over Shawn Jordan.

Which former TUF contestant will prove to be the better man when they square off next month?
