UFC heavyweight staple Stefan Struve is coming into his own at 25-years-old, riding an impressive four-fight win streak, all stoppages, heading into his UFC on FUEL 8 bout with Mark Hunt.
In an interview with MMA Fighting, the 7-foot “Skyscraper” states that a finish over “The Super Samoan” should earn him a shot at the UFC heavyweight title.
"When I win this fight, and I finish this fight yet again, then I'm on a five-fight win streak with five finishes in the heavyweight division," Struve said of the match up with Hunt.
"Nobody else in the heavyweight division is on a five-fight win streak. I think I have a pretty strong bid to call myself No. 1 contender."
Struve current win streak includes victories over known heavyweight fighters in Pat Barry, Dave Herman, Lavar Johnson and Stipe Miocic.
However, he has struggled in the past against top contenders such as “The Ultimate Fighter” winner Roy Nelson and former champ Junior dos Santos.
However, Struve attributes those losses to being young and still needing time to mature as a fighter.
"People expect a little bit too much too soon. I was 21 when I signed my UFC contract. 21 for three days when I fought Junior dos Santos. What do you think happens when a 21-year-old enters the UFC?” he asked.
“He's not going to take the division by storm. He's going to need his time to become a better fighter, become bigger and stronger, grow into his body."
While Hunt lost an unheard of six fights in a row between July 2006 and Sept. 2010, he’s bounced back with three consecutive wins including a devastating knockout over feared striker Cheick Kongo at UFC 144 last February.
A win for the former PRIDE star, who holds wins over the prime versions of Wanderlei Silva and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, would immediately put him in the heavyweight title picture.
A heavyweight slugfest would likely favor Hunt here, who has won five of his eight professional fights via knockout, while Struve has a clear advantage on the ground (16 submissions in 25 career fights).
