In a move that has left the majority of the fight community stunned, former UFC middleweight title challenger Yushin Okami was released by the promotion, according to a report by MMA Junkie published on Friday night.
“Thunder” was one praised as “the best fighter to ever come out of Japan” back in August 2011. Now, just a little over two years later, the 32-year-old is ready to test out the free agent market.
Okami suffered a brutal TKO loss at the hands of surging 185-pound contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at UFC Fight Night 28, he had won his previous three bouts before that.
To put things into perspective, Okami, who was actually regarded as the number 6 middleweight in the world according to the UFC’s official rankings at the time he was released, is 3-3 in his past six bout.
He also hasn’t beaten a top-tier fighter since outpointing Nate Marquardt at UFC 122 in November 2010.
With that being said, the Japanese grappler boasted a 13-5 record inside the Octagon and only lost back-to-back fights once during his 11-year career.
Okami fought then-champion Anderson Silva at UFC 134 in August 2011, looking tentative and outmatched throughout the bout before getting knocked out in the second round.
The good news for the Judo black belt is he has already gotten at least one job offer.
Shortly after the news broke that Okami was cut from the UFC, World Series of Fighting matchmaker Ali Abdel-Aziz sent a tweet his way:
“@OkamiYushin you have home at @MMAWorldSeries @arielhelwani,” he wrote, also mentioning MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani in the message.
Will Okami sign a contract with WSOF in the very near future or will he entertain a number of options before finding a new employer?
