Ask and you shall receive, at least if you’re UFC bantamweight Alex Caceres.
Late last month, “Bruce Leeroy” agreed with a fan on Twitter that a fight with former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber would be “an honor.”
About two weeks later, turns out that Faber, and more importantly the UFC, agreed the matchup was a good one. So now, Caceres vs. Faber is tentatively scheduled for UFC 175 on July 5.
ESPN was the first media outlet to report that verbal agreements for the about came in on Wednesday.
While the bout is a huge opportunity for Caceres, a former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter, it is a curious one from a ranking standpoint.
According to the UFC’s official bantamweight rankings, Faber is the No. 1 fighter in the world, while Caceres comes in at No. 13.
To his credit, the 25-year-old is riding a 5-fight unbeaten streak, most recently pulling off a huge upset when he choked out then unbeaten prospect Sergio Pettis at UFC on FOX 10 in January.
Meanwhile, Faber is 4-1 in his last five contests, most recently suffering a controversial knockout at the hands of champion Renan Barao at UFC 169 in February.
Although “The California Kid” has lost his past six title fights, he has never lost a non-title bout and has and annihilated perennial contenders Scott Jorgensen and Michael McDonald last year (he went 4-0 inside the Octagon in 2013).
Will Caceres be able to pull off one of the biggest upsets of all time of will Faber make the Las Vegas oddsmakers look like geniuses when he makes short work of his ambitious opponent?
