WSOF: Justin Gaethje Rips Melvin Guillard, Guillard Misses Weight for Title Fight

UFC veteran Melvin Guillard hit the scales heavy on Friday night, so his World Series of Fighting lightweight title bout with Justin Gaethje will now take place at a catchweight of 158.6 pounds.

“The Young Assassin” had to hit 155 pounds, given there is no pound allowance for championship bouts, but was unable to cut the extra 3.6 pounds.

Guillard, 31, who hasn’t fought at welterweight since January 2006, has now missed weight in both of his WSOF contests.

His knockout victory over Gesias Cavalcante as WSOF 11 in July took place at a 157-pound catchweight after the American Top Team fighter decided he was unable to shed the extra pound.

Guillard has a ledger of just 3-5(1) in his past nine contests, getting released from the UFC after a clear-cut decision loss to Michael Johnson at UFC Fight Night 37 in March.

Gaethje, who just turned 26 on Friday, is unbeaten (12-0) inside the cage, boasting five straight knockouts under the World Series of Fighting banner since March 2013.

As a matter of fact, Gaethje has seen a fight go to the judges’ scorecards just once in his career, a decision victory over Marcus Edwards back in June 2012.

In an interview with MMA Mania prior to weigh-ins, Gaethje ripped Guillard for his pre-fight antics and vowed to knock his former training partner out cold.

"Melvin is getting put to sleep," he said. "That's the only way I will be satisfied. I am totally fine with going to sleep in order to put him to sleep.

“He deserves... He doesn't deserve anything! He is a piece of s---, and if he wants to treat people like crap but be cool in front of their faces he will pay. There is a new breed coming, and that's me. Out with the old, in with the new."
