WSOF President Ray Sefo: Rousimar Palhares Could Be a Good Addition After All

Embattled UFC veteran Rousimar Palhares is in the midst of one of the worst months during his professional career, but that may be coming to an end soon.

World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo, despite initially saying he has no interest, told MMA Junkie that he may consider adding the submission specialist to his roster sometime soon.

“Initially, I’ll admit I didn’t think World Series of Fighting should even entertain the idea of bring Palhares on board,” Sefo said.

"But I’ve been speaking with our team, as well as some people I trust throughout the industry, and I’m not so sure he doesn’t deserve another chance. We haven’t made any concrete decisions just yet, but I think maybe Palhares could be a valuable part of our organization.”

Palhares was cut from the UFC after holding onto a heel hook submission hold after the referee had waved off the fight against Mike Pierce at UFC Fight Night 29 on October 9.

“Toquinho” was suspended for doing the exact same thing to Tomasz Drwal in March 2010, and also failed a post-fight drug test for elevated levels of testosterone in December 2012, so the UFC decided the hulking Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt wasn’t worth the stress anymore after his incident with Pierce.

Sefo said he had a change of heart after he heard remarks from Renzo Gracie indicating that a heel hook is very difficult to finish, especially in MMA, and that some submissions need to be held longer than others.

While Sefo stopped short of saying he would soon work out a deal with Palhares, he admitted he had been in discussions with his manager, Alex Davis.

Will Palhares make his way back to a major fight organization before the end of the year or will Sefo once again change his mind and decide not to ultimately take a risk on the dangerous submission specialist?
