The NBA season is not yet a month old and already we find ourselves speculating on those deserving of All-Star nods. We can thank the NBA for this as they have released the list of players eligible for the Eastern and Western Conference teams.
As a hoops fan, take the time and go to NBA.com/asb or text the players last name to ‘MYNBA’. No sense sitting back and belly-aching about the selections if you don’t step up and cast a vote yourself. Do you feel as though Derrick Rose is undeserving of a spot or perhaps you disagree with Russell Westbrook being named a starter? Have your say and vote today.
Given that we are about a dozen games into the year and that the All-Star game doesn’t take place till mid-February there is certainly a boatload of time for players to show that they are deserving of being voted in as a starter. In the meantime though, here is eDraft’s 2013-14 NBA All-Stars if the voting took place today.
EASTERN CONFERENCE

With two votes to cast for backcourt players, I’m going to pass on the much hyped Deron Williams as well as the more popular Derrick Rose. Kemba Walker and Dwyane Wade also don’t quite make the cut as voted in starters.
I see four fairly equally deserving players and any pairing out of this foursome is justified. The foursome is comprised of Arron Afflalo, Kyrie Irving, Lance Stephenson and Jeff Teague. Now given that the voting process is more of a popularity contest than it is a talent competition, it is unlikely that these guys will get the proper credit.
For all it’s worth, my Eastern Conference backcourt votes go to Teague and Irving as starters with Afflalo narrowly missing out.
Things can certainly change as the season progresses and maybe Rose will play himself in. Here’s hoping that the name recognition factor doesn’t prohibit Irving and Teague from getting their due this season.
Choosing only three for the frontcourt is where things get tough. Let’s start with the obvious and that is LeBron James; he gets a vote no question. Next most deserving is probably Paul George who is having a tremendous start to the season for the Indiana Pacers.
So that leaves only one starter vote left and a number of deserving candidates. The top-three at this point in the season seem to be Andre Drummond, Al Horford and Nikola Vucevic. While i’d like to see all three make it, they won’t and it will be a hard cut-down for someone. As much as I like Drummond here I have to give my vote to Atlanta’s Horford.
WESTERN CONFERENCE
As is the case when it comes to anything Western Conference, the competition is fierce. There are so many deserving players of All-Star nods that it is impossible to even fit them all onto the roster much less pick a starting five. Despite this we have given it our best shot and here is what we have come up with.
The guard play in the West is as close as it comes. One thing for certain is that Chris Paul is the number one overall selection regardless of position. So with Paul penned into the backcourt that leaves only one spot for the likes of James Harden and Stephen Curry to compete for.
Thus far into the season I’m inclined to give the nod to Harden, but only by the slightest of margins.
I think that the superior scoring average does bode well; however, Curry is shooting the rock at a better clip and has really made an effort to be a distributor on the floor and not just a scorer.
The race is close and given the pair’s history of injuries it might come down to who is healthy come February.
The competition in the frontcourt is no less mind you as there are six legitimate threats to the starting lineup.
With only three votes to cast one must make a decision. Similar to Paul’s spot in the backcourt being all but sewn up; I don’t foresee anything barring Minnesota’s Kevin Love from being in the starting rotation.
With Love in, that means DeMarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin and Dwight Howard are vying for two of the remaining spots. Cousins and Griffin are having solid years, ones certainly worthy of being named starters. While Durant is going to be tough to dethrone as a returning All-Star starter. That leaves Howard who is having a monster year and Davis whose home city is hosting the event.
It is a tough call but I have to give my vote to the Pelicans Davis because I’d like to see the host city have a starter and he is as deserving as the next guy and reluctantly my second vote goes to the Rockets Howard. Durant has the best chance at cracking the starting lineup but as of now he is on the outside looking in.
