2014 NBA Draft - Milwaukee Bucks Draft Projections

The Milwaukee Bucks are in an interesting position come draft day. It is such that the second overall pick is really going to be decided by how the Cleveland Cavaliers draft with the first overall pick. Now that Joel Embiid has had surgery he is no longer considered a viable option at either the first or second overall spot. Those two spots are all but guaranteed to go to Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker.

Now the Bucks are at the mercy of the Cavs here and they will undoubtedly take whomever isn’t already selected. There is little chance of the Bucks trading this pick as they need some young talent with superstar potential to help resurrect that franchise. There seems to be little need to try and move up into the first pick slot as the price is reportedly quite costly and the Bucks are just as likely to get their preferred player with the second overall pick.

Of all the draft picks in the upcoming NBA Entry Draft this one holds the least suspense. Parker and Wiggins are the consensus top two picks. There is no doubt that Cleveland will take one of those two which obviously leaves Milwaukee with the easy decision of taking the other.

The only real fun to be had in the draft room in Milwaukee is by trying to determine which player would be a better fit for the club; as mute a point as it will become.

Biggest Draft Day Need:

The Milwaukee Bucks roster is piece meal of other team castoffs. O.J. Mayo is overpaid given his production and Larry Sanders is about to become grossly overcompensated given his attitude. The rest of the roster is basically comprised of backcourt players. Many of which can play; however, too many folks all doing the same thing doesn’t make for a productive nor successful team.

Case in point is that Sanders, John Henson, Ersan Ilyasova, Ekpe Udoh and Khris Middleton basically play the same style and same position on the court. Then you have Carlos Delfino, Mayo and Ramon Sessions all basically vying for minutes at the two-guard spot. Bottom line is that the Bucks have too much roster redundancy.

Which is why the Bucks would have targeted Joel Embiid here had he not been injured. Embiid would have provided that stability in the middle which ultimately would have provided the flexibility to move the problem child that has become Larry Sanders. However, given that Embiid won’t likely be playing basketball anywhere next season and the lingering questions about his health long term, he is likely not in consideration here.

If the Bucks had their way come draft day they would prefer to take the former Kansas Jayhawk Andrew Wiggins. Wiggins would immediately become their best option at shooting guard and it would allow them to shop Mayo and his contract. Not only would Wiggins be their best player on the team he would generate some much needed publicity for the Bucks and their new ownership group craves validation and recognition. Unfortunately for the Bucks, the Cavaliers see the same potential here and as a result Wiggins won’t be available past the top pick.

The Bucks might prefer Wiggins privately but they will ultimately get Duke’s Jabari Parker by default. Note how the Bucks are decidedly quiet on the draft rumour front. They know full well that they are going to land Wiggins or Parker and they absolutely don’t want to alienate either camp or create ill-will about coming to a basketball barren market that is Milwaukee.
