The 2015 NBA Draft has come to a very anticlimactic close. There was so much speculation and so many names being tossed around as potential draft day trades that most people expected Thursday to be an action packed day with plenty of stories and trades to cover. As it turned out only a handful of minor deals took place during the actual draft and while General Manager’s phones are sure to be ringing over the next week regarding trade targets and potential restricted free agents; everything up to now has been pretty mundane.
With that in mind the NBA Draft still took place and teams stepped up to the podium to announce their selections. To no ones surprise the Minnesota Timberwolves selected Karl Anthony Towns with their first overall selection and from there, things went more or less how most people thought. There were a few surprise picks and a few players that slide further than anticipated as the night wore on.
Before we take a more in-depth look at each of the lottery selections it is worth hitting the highlights right off the start. Here are the top sleeper draft picks of the night. These rankings are based on team need, player ability and overall fit between the two sides.
Willie Cauley-Stein - Sacramento Kings
Willie went to the Kings with the sixth overall pick and while the five players picked ahead of him were all very deserving and will likely all be solid contributors for their respective clubs; this pick here checks off a lot of needs for the Kings. Cauley-Stein will be an excellent addition along side DeMarcus Cousins and he will allow Cousins to play a more natural four. Cauley-Stein can play defense, protect the rim, rebound and run the floor for a big. He is definitely capable of finishing around the rim and knocking down jumpers should teams double Cousins in the post. There were some motivation doubts and injury questions surrounding Willie coming into this draft; however, with George Karl running the sidelines and Vlade Divac being a hands-on executive, there are support figures in place for Cauley-Stein to succeed.
Justise Winslow - Miami Heat
This pick just came up aces for Pat Riley and the Miami Heat. Winslow is capable of playing right away for the Heat and while he may not be the starter, depending on Luol Deng, he is certainly capable of playing decent minutes. Winslow can defend, rebound and contribute offensively for the Heat. He has a versatile offensive game, although not predicated on spot-up shooting, he can score and attack the rim. Winslow’s nose for the ball and ability to defend opposing small forwards makes him a big asset and now that the Heat have him, they aren’t likely going to lobby too hard for Deng to stick around and may try to unload him for some help at shooting guard.
Cameron Payne - Oklahoma City Thunder
The Thunder were long believed to have made a draft promise to Payne and it looks like they made good on their word Thursday as they took the Murray State product fourteenth overall. This is such a good fit for both Payne and OKC that things really could only have maybe worked out better if Payne had say gone to Dallas or San Antonio. Payne will have a chance to learn up close and personal on how to break down defenders and attack the rim from one of the games best attacking point guards in Russell Westbrook. All the while Payne can comfortably do what he does best and that is run the pick-and-roll to near perfection and continue to punish teams for not respecting his ability to get to the bucket. This is just a fantastic pick for the Thunder as they absolutely need an insurance policy for Westbrook in case of injury and Payne could certainly help fill any void there by stepping in and running the offense.
Bobby Portis - Chicago Bulls
Portis is an NBA ready prospect in terms of physical development, size, length and strength. He lacks real offensive polish; however, he is still a beast on the boards. Every scouting report on Portis tells the same story of endless energy, hustle-type player, nose for the ball, aggressive nature, excellent wingspan and a pest on defense. Reading these kind of reports conjure up memories of Joakim Noah on draft night as everyone questioned his offensive skills yet praised the work ethic, toughness and tenacity. The Bulls got themselves one heck of a blue collar-type player here who can learn from some of the best in Noah, Pau Gasol and Taj Gibson.
