The season might be young, but some teams already know that they have problems budding within their roster. Perhaps the chemistry isn’t right, or a contract is too big, but the bottom line is that no matter how early in the season, the phones are certainly ringing around the NBA. After all, the Heat already shipped Mario Chalmers to Memphis. So who else is likely to be traded this year? Let’s take a look at 5 players who could be shipped out before the trade deadline.
Carmelo Anthony, Forward, New York Knicks
This inclusion might have become less likely over the first few games of the season, as the Knicks have actually played well so far. Anthony has been integral in their resurgence and is playing at a high level offensively. He is the focal point of the Knicks, but there is no question that other teams are putting feelers out to see how likely it is that the Knicks would be willing to move him. His contract is still hefty, but with the salary cap going up substantially this offseason, Melo could actually be attained at a perceived bargain.
DeMarcus Cousins, Center, Sacramento Kings
Across the country on the west coast, things aren’t going so well in Sacramento. The season started off poorly and Cousins was heard to have called out the players and coaches. The Kings have kind of gotten it back on track, but he is still being mentioned in trade rumors to Boston specifically, among others. He is still a tremendous talent, but his attitude could get him shipped out. It might all come down to whether upper management values him more than head coach George Karl, a question that will likely rear its ugly head this season.
Derrick Rose, Guard, Chicago Bulls
Is the Derrick Rose era in Chicago coming to a close? Reading the tealeaves seems to indicate that it is. Though the team hasn’t publicly said anything, the future for Rose seems to be somewhere else. This offseason we heard rumors that Rose and Jimmy Butler didn’t have a great relationship, and with his injury issues it stands to reason that Chicago might want to move on from the former MVP.
Chris Andersen, Forward, Miami Heat
Although the Miami Heat hasn’t played Chris Andersen much this season, he is still eating up a significant portion of their cap space. Andersen has only appeared in two games, but is making $5 million. Andersen got his big deal during the Heat’s heyday, but now the team has moved in another direction and Hassan Whiteside is playing out of his mind. A team looking to absorb a contract and some dead salary would look no further than Chris “Birdman” Andersen this season.
Joe Johnson, Guard, Brooklyn Nets
The Nets let go of Deron Williams this offseason, opting to clear cap space and start a youth movement. Now, the Nets are 2-10 and are heading nowhere quickly. That is why the Nets could look to move Johnson as well, with a chance to clear even more space. Johnson has been one of the few positives for the Nets, and with the Celtics controlling the team’s pick in 2016, Brooklyn could try to land a few picks of their own.
