5 NBA Players That Still Might Be Traded

It may be hard to comprehend, but the NBA season is right around the corner. Somehow the summer has passed us by and the calendar now reads September. Typically, this part of the year is the lull in the NBA year, as the free agents have mostly all signed by now and training camps don’t start for another few weeks. That means no moves, acquisitions, or deals, right? Not necessarily. There still are a few uncertain situations around the NBA that could be resolved before the season begins. Is anyone on the move before October? Let’s take a look at five players who might be traded prior to the start of the 2016-2017 NBA season.

Nick Young, Los Angeles Lakers

The issues with Young and the Lakers don’t need to be detailed, as there have been plenty over the last few seasons. Aside from his problems with D’Angelo Russell and the locker room, Young’s game is inefficient and takes away playing time from the future guards of the Lakers. Los Angeles has been looking to unload Young, and if they find a willing trade partner they won’t hesitate to let him go. Otherwise, they could also explore waiving or buying him out of his contract, but either way it seems unlikely he’ll be on the team on day one.

Danilo Gallinari, Denver Nuggets

Last season, the Nuggets looked to trade Gallinari, but he rejected their offer. The team is looking to get younger and has a few young, promising players on the rise. Also, Gallinari and Wilson Chandler play the same position, are just about the same age, but Gallinari’s per-year contract is over $4 million more than Chandler’s. It seems somewhat likely that Denver will try to move him again before the season starts, to clear space for younger draft picks on what is definitively in rebuild mode. Gallinari should think twice before refusing another trade if the right team comes along.

DeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento Kings

Cousins and the Kings’ front office have repeatedly clashed over the last few seasons. He has openly criticized many of the team’s moves, most recently the drafting of another big man in this year’s draft. Given the dysfunction that has unfolded around him, almost consistently, it’s understandable that he would be upset about the team’s lack of progress and direction. All of this means that as the tension grows and time passes without Cousins believing in Sacramento’s plan, the likelier it becomes that he will be moved so the team can at least get something in return for one of the most skilled centers in the NBA.

Paul George, Indiana Pacers

This one is definitely a stretch, but hear me out. The Lakers have reportedly been pushing hard for the Pacers’ superstar, and are willing to throw in a few assets in the process. The Pacers, meanwhile, are in somewhat of a limbo. Are they a contender, or are they gearing up for the future? If they’re contenders, then this deal doesn’t make any sense. If they’re rebuilding, however, they could get a huge return for a star like George. The Celtics have also reportedly been talking with Indiana, and have a bounty of draft picks (thanks, Nets) at their disposal as well. It would be a surprise to see him get traded, but the suitors are there, and the right situation could easily present itself.

Nerlens Noel, Philadelphia 76ers

I’ve written about the 76ers trading Noel before, and while it hasn’t happened yet it still is in play. The Sixers acquired a lot of young talent this offseason, and that wasn’t restricted to just the backcourt. The additions of Ben Simmons and the return of Joel Embiid, as well as the expected improvement in Jahlil Okafor’s game mean that someone is going to get left out. Seeing as Noel is 22 (and this makes him somehow the elder statesman of the frontcourt) and entering his third season without a semblance of an offensive game, he appears to be the more likely candidate to be moved.
