Breaking Down the Reported Kevin Love Deal

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers have reportedly agreed to a conditional trade that will send Kevin Love to LeBron James land in exchange for 2014 first overall pick Andrew Wiggins, 2013 first overall pick Anthony Bennett and a 2015 first-round pick. Love reportedly intends to opt out of his contract and re-sign with Cleveland in 2015.

Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor foreshadowed the trade last week, saying that his All-Star forward is "likely" to be traded to the Cavaliers by the end of August. The deal would have probably already occurred, but Andrew Wiggins is not eligible to be traded until August 23.

All of this, of course, comes as a result of Love indicating that he will not play in a Timberwolves uniform in the 2015 NBA season. In search of his first playoff appearance, the six-year veteran was simply waiting on the Cavaliers to make their move so he could play alongside the best player in the game. LeBron James is the ultimate attraction for owners, fans, and players alike and Love knew that moving to Cleveland would give him the best opportunity to compete for a title.

Nowadays, the right combination of three All-Star players will give any team an excellent chance to play in the NBA Finals. The trio of Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and LeBron James provided the Miami Heat with a free pass to The Finals for four consecutive years. Now, James will be teaming up with one of the most exciting point guards in the league in Kyrie Irving and adding Kevin Love would create one of the best possible threesomes in the league.

And the attention-seeking NBA made it all possible. Since LeBron departed in 2010 for Miami, the Cavaliers have won the NBA draft lottery three out of four years. In 2011, they selected Irving with the top pick, then drafted Bennett in 2013 with the winning ping pong ball. Riding a slim 1.7 percent chance to win the lottery this year, Dan Gilbert and his bow-tied son came out on top again, winning the rights to the best player entering the Association. Andrew Wiggins was ultimately selected with that top pick and will almost undoubtedly be shipped off to the Central Time Zone with his fellow Canadian baller in exchange for one of the best power forwards in the league. So while the idea of LeBron James grooming his rookie protégé into superstardom was entertaining, a proven superstar (i.e. Love) is a little more "wanted."

Love, a former fifth overall draft pick, presumably has his suitcase packed and ticket punched to head to the media frenzy that has now consumed Cleveland with the arrivals of LeBron and Johnny Manziel. With this trade on the horizon, it appears the pick-heavy Cavs are poised to become the outstanding favorites in the Eastern Conference. A devastating injury to Paul George coupled with the departure of Lance Stephenson has decimated the Indiana Pacers. Larry Bird's squad now has nowhere to go but downhill.

Meanwhile, Dan Gilbert and General Manager David Griffin have worked tirelessly, surrounding LeBron James with a carefully selected supporting cast. Two of James' former Miami teammates in Mike Miller and James Jones are expected to rejoin The King and Ray Allen is pondering the idea of following suit. Free agent Shawn Marion may also wind up in Ohio. That would leave the Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls as the anticipated top two teams that will fight for home court in the playoffs as the San Antonio Spurs defend their title. But as the NBA offseason begins to wrap up, the countdown is on for August 23, a date on which the basketball world will wish a recovering superstar, Kobe Bryant, a happy 36th birthday.
